Unemployment Down to 8.8 Percent 04-01-2011 - by Opie Winfrey, Staff Mumbler Unemployment is down to 8.8 percent. This is great news for everybody, but it's not time to pop the cork on that champagne bottle just yet. There is still a long way to go.
There have been improvements in the health care sector, in the leisure and hospitality
industries and in manufacturing. So this is good news, right? Well, not entirely.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
"Employment in local government continued to trend down over the month. Local government has lost 416,000 jobs since an employment peak in September 2008."
And that's not all. Just because people are employed doesn't mean that they are taking home
what they used to, or even doing the jobs that they used to. People are still making sacrifices
and doing what they need to do to survive.
All in all it doesn't seem like the public is jumping for joy at this point; a sentiment
that can be witnessed on blogs and video comments around the Internet. People are
still skeptical as can be witnessed by some of the comments on the video below like,
"We heard it all before!" and "we need REAL change".
As companies run leaner in an attempt to regain their pre-2007 earnings, those lucky enough to have jobs are paying the price by taking on more responsibility, taking pay cuts and working longer to keep their jobs. The additional issues of high-foreclosures and astronomical fuel prices, still make this an uphill battle for most American families.
