Katy Perry's Record Sales Get Their Place in the Record Books

The pop star does what many of her contemporaries could not and ties Michael Jackson's record.

For those of us who just imagined Katy Perry as a passing fad, this has come as a shock. There had been times when she simply seemed to be yet another uninteresting pop singer, and one that, like the others, was assumed to be average and unimportant; one that we'd all assumed would be forgotten about by the time the next decade rolls around.

That does not seem to be the case, however, as Katy Perry has now cemented in her superstar status by tying a record that was only held by the supposed "King of Pop" himself, Michael Jackson. Like Jackson, Perry has proved the improbable to not be impossible and accomplished what so many other hugely popular artists have failed to do: Katy Perry has scored five number one hits on the billboard charts, and all from one album.

First done by Jacko with his album, "Bad," this ranking is looked on as quite an accomplishment. It is also noted that Katy Perry is the first ever female artist to pull it off, though it's probably unfair to look at an artist's gender above their albums and abilities.

This great feat is sure to be met with some hostility and annoyance as well since she has also done what so many classics and old favorites have not. "The Beatles didn't do it. Elvis and Madonna never did it, either. But pop star Katy Perry just tied Michael Jackson for an impressive place in music's history books," says CBS news. But Perry has definitely produced some attention worthy tracks to reach this record, and let's face it- what have the Beatles and Madonna done that wasn't terribly overrated?
