Nicki Minaj - Super Bass (A review)
08-09-2011

While climbing rapidly in popularity, "Super Bass" seems to have a complete lack of bass... or talent for that matter.

For a while it seemed that she would just fade away. Nicki Minaj was, at a time, just the newest voice under the Cash Money record label and surely the most forgettable. We were introduced to her in that terrible song, "Bedrock," in which she had the worst verse without question. I don't think anyone would have even remembered who she was if not for Cash Money's annoying (and apparently successful) marketing schemes that involve plugging fifty different artists into each others' tracks. She was no longer just, "that chick Nicki Minaj with the annoying verse," but soon she became "that chick Nicki Minaj with Lil Wayne featured in half of her songs." Her musical career would have crashed and died if not for this support, and seeing as how Wayne had quite a bit of spotlight at the time it ended up being a very impressive amount of support.

But to get a better view of how this new song stacks up, I might as well tell you my thoughts on her so you can get a good gauge on it. I find her intolerable. I feel that most of her music would do well as an auditory torture device. Her appearance is a more obnoxious take on Lady Gaga- bright colors, crazy wigs, and every other sort of gag that has nothing to do with music -and her voice is the most grating, irritating thing this side of Kesha. Also, her rapping skills are on par with Lil Wayne's, which probably sounds impressive to all you legions of Wayne fans, but the sad side of it is that many of you wont be able to tell the difference between rapping and mumbling incoherently into a microphone. Nicki Minaj's vocal talents, like those of Lil Wayne, are the kind that make you want to slap yourself in the forehead and simply ask, "what would Tupac think of this trash?"

But now that you know that Pac is rolling over in his grave, mourning the death of the music he had a passion for and lamenting Minaj's entire musical catalog in the process, let's get to the new song itself. "Super Bass."

As you can see, "Super Bass" is a very deceiving title here. It's the kind of track name you would expect for a repetitive, booming club beat with some sort of techno backdrop; it's the kind of title that promises... well, bass. But no. The lack of bass is probably one of the most annoying elements of this song. Not even just bass, but it seems that the entirety of the instrumentals have been replaced with beeping noises from Macintosh computers and water droplets from some dumb, trendy, hipster drink commercial. The instrumentals are almost completely absent and all we are left with is Minaj's rhythmic mumbling.

But, like I said, I mentioned how much I absolutely loathe her music for a reason. You should know how god awful I think she is just so that when I say I actually found this song listenable... well you get the point. For the first time out of any song I've heard her do, her voice in this track did not make me want to immediately drive my head through a wall. It was mildly (VERY mildly) catchy and her rhythm was fairly on beat. I still found this song to be pretty bad- the chorus is maddeningly typical and the lack of instrumentals was infuriating -but like I said, it's better than pretty much anything else she's ever done.

The only other redeeming factor I can think of is the energy displayed in the video. Everything, down to her smiling countenance, seem to further the lightheartedness of the song, and when she's not twitching her eyes about while trying to appear quirky, the video can also be moderately aesthetically pleasing. I would give this song and video a 3.5 out of 10.

Probably good considering I wouldn't even give a half-a-point rating to anything else she's done.
