Avril Lavigne - Smile (Review)

What used to make her music mildly unique and interesting is now nothing other than annoying. With her new song, "Smile," heads are shaking and we wonder when she's just going to give up already.

Avril Lavigne has always been famous for being somewhat of a poseur. She has received countless amounts of criticism for pretending to be a punk-rocker while playing simple pop songs that are about as hard and edgy as Brittney Spears music. Wait, no, I take that back. Even less hard and edgy actually.

But her music has always been somewhat passable before this point. The public has been willing to ignore the fifty spiked bracelets featured on either arm; they've ignored the fact that she acts like she plays punk music, while her conception of "punk rock" involves hanging out at the mall. It was laughable, but like I said, people were willing to ignore it. People thought her songs were decent at least and were willing to ignore for a few moments just how annoying she could be.

But now, with the song "Smile," it's impossible to ignore how unbelievably annoying she has become. Trying to play on that faux-punk-rock attitude that she has become famous for, she comes at us with such amazingly intelligent lyrics as, "you know that I'm a crazy bitch." And I would say that maybe she's still caught up in being thirteen, which seems to be the only excuse for how annoying she has become, but this obviously can't be the case as her first couple albums had a larger element of depth and maturity to them.

All in all, this is a terrible song. There is absolutely nothing good about it and it has not a single redeeming quality that you can't get without listening to it on mute. It's so standard, so plain, so uninteresting, and so obnoxious that it hurts my head just to think about it in order to write this review. Please, Avril, please just give up.

I rate this song as a 1 one a scale of 1 to 10.
