Controversy over Chloe Lattanzi's music video

Chloe Lattanzi, the daughter of well known singer Olivia Newton-John, has sparked a fair amount of controversy with the music video for her song, "Play with Me."

Her song "Play with Me" has shocked many with its supposedly graphic content, and enough controversy has stemmed from it that she released a second video to explain that it was fictional- the second video had to go out of the way to explain that the music video was purely fictional and that she did not want to kill herself, because apparently the public was having a little trouble figuring that out for some reason. I personally find it a little silly that this video has shocked so many, as it is hardly the darkest or most offensive thing out there, but as the shock can be subjective and offense is not given but taken, you might have to take a look for yourselves. Here is the video:

I think the controversy itself has overtaken the actual popularity of the song: I've heard so much about it, but it's sometimes impossible to even remember what the tune sounds like. But this song would likely be far less popular without the controversy. The best thing about it is a half-hearted dubstep beat in the background, and even that isn't that good. Her singing is far from impressive, and the lyrics seem to be highly repetitive. Come to think of it, if this song wasn't thought to be so "shocking," I would hardly remember it at all.

The Australian Council for Children and Media (ACCM) say that this video "does nothing to empower young people" as well as that it "glamorizes a range of harmful behaviors," while the singer of 25 on the other hand explains that it is "purely for artistic value" and makes a point to mention "I don't want to kill myself." Also adding to the publicity is that "After the death of Amy Winehouse, the project has been steeped in controversy," according to an article from ETonline. The media would have you believe that this is the most terrifying video you'll ever lay your eyes upon.

But since when does every song have to "empower young people?" And since when is the material of this video so shocking? It would have been shocking many years back before the whole "emo" music craze, where countless artists have done videos on the exact same subject with far more graphic depictions. Hell, graphic material is alive and kicking all over Youtube- music videos in the death metal genre, for example, can be straight up gory, but for some reason they don't need a warning before their videos and this simple pop song does. The only reason people are so shocked might have to do with her being compared to her mother, Olivia Newton-John, who's music stood in stark contrast to her daughters; she's an individual and you shouldn't expect her music to be anything like that of her mother.

As for the fact that ETonline says that the death of Amy Winehouse added to the controversy of this song, well, this is probably the most ridiculous thing about all the publicity Lattanzi is getting. The song was released before Winehouse's death, yes before, and how anyone managed to accuse the video of such a connection is beyond me. The media is clearly just being oversensitive about the death of a celebrity (it's like the Michael Jackson thing all over again). Even the singer herself states that, "I was actually really sad when I heard about that. I... funny enough, I didn't even associate it with anything to do with my video."

"It's so funny - I don't think I went that far," said Chloe. "It was a metaphor for what I was going through, so I wasn't like, 'Yeah I want to slit my wrist or put some electrical devices in a bathtub.' It was just about being in a lot of pain and dying inside in front of the one you love and them not noticing what you're going through."

Chloe Lattanzi Daughter of Olivia Newton-John
Yeah, because this is clearly the face of someone who is "dying inside."

Through it all, this amount of controversy is ridiculous. What entertainment news sees as dark, horrific, and tormented, I see as the over dramatic whining of a young, shallow singer who is trying desperately to appear dark, conflicted, and sophisticated. This is not as shocking as some have made it out to sound, nor does it have anything whatsoever to do with the death of Amy Winehouse- the shock is little more than sensationalism, and it has earned an untalented artist much more free publicity than she deserves.

I love that song. It gives me gosoebumps. It’s so wonderful you’re there to share these sweet tender moments with your children. Payton will be better man because of the conversations you have with him and the times you share. You’re just awesome!
