Katy Perry's latest songs are drawing in mad traffic on Youtube. But are either of them any good? Read on and see.

"I know a bar out in Mars," says Kanye West in his featured verse from E.T. "Where they drive space ships instead of cars." ...now, I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure it's impossible to drive to Mars right?

E.T. is one of two recent Katy Perry songs that has quickly become immensely popular. Currently having over one hundred million views, this song has an electronic-sounding beat in the background, a verse or two by famous award-show-interruption Kanye West, and overall a tone that seems a little different from what Perry has normally done throughout her career- where most of her hits have been fun, upbeat, and full of energy, E.T. takes a tone that is a bit more serious and features a video that almost comes off as mildly creepy at times. Also popular at the moment is the less famous song, Last Friday Night, and when I say "less famous," I hardly mean unknown. This bright, bubbly, and somewhat typical song is rapidly approaching sixty million Youtube page views and does not look like it is going to stop any time soon. A video that is very cinematic- acting as a counterweight for the pure, simple, aesthetic value of E.T -Last Friday Night is played with credits across the screen like a movie, has a full (though unimpressive) storyline, and has an impressive cast of characters and celebrity cameos for a mere music video. You may notice the rightfully-hated sensation that is Rebecca Black playing a part, as well as the guys from Hanson and Kenny G.

First and foremost, there's not much to say about E.T. other than that it's different; it's an interesting change in style. Even the video seems to be a largely different style and seems- though I use this term generously -very artistically done. The best part of this song is the background, which is both catchy an hypnotic all at once. Unfortunately, though, the rest of this song is fairly forgettable. Katy Perry's vocals are not at all bad, but at the same time not at all interesting enough to remember. And on top of that, Kanye seems to be getting progressively worse and worse with every song that he does. I'm sure he was featured in the song largely for marketing reasons, but it is still painful to listen to every second that he speaks. It may have garnered a wider audience for the track, but at the cost of damaging the song. Overall, the word average can not be used enough to describe this song, and it deserves a 5 out of 10 rating.

Last Friday Night, on the other hand, had the advantage of being average without being the least bit annoying. And with an element of originality brought in by a movie-like video, this song is definitely not bad. It even comes close to being funny sometimes (though not entirely succeeding) with obvious nods to Rebecca Black's song "Friday" and an ending where her parents rush home to stop "Uncle Kenny" [Kenny G.] from playing the sax for whatever reason. Other than that, this song is very typical for her, but at the same time very well done. It runs along the same upbeat, unoriginal format as most of her songs, but is so well done that it surpasses most of them. In the end, it is just a very standard, typical Katy Perry song, but with everything turning out better than usual. This song deserves a rating of 6.5 out of 10.

Let's just hope she doesn't ruin this by releasing another track as annoying as "California Girls."
