Rebecca Black's new song: My Moment (review)

She's still getting a lot of hate, but not as much- and that doesn't make sense considering that this song is worse than the last one.

If there's one thing Rebecca Black can do good, it's to be terrible. Remember months back when her song "Friday" became a widely known, hated hit? Me neither, because I tried to fill my memory with more pleasant things, but nonetheless it was kind of a big deal. Her youtube views skyrocketed, mainly due to the viewers who were trying to figure out, "Uh, hey bro, is this chick serious? No, is she trying to sound bad to be funny or something?" People have listened to worse, but the general consensus was that it was horrid: more commenters flocked to her video to take a massive, steamy crap on her musical career than they did with Justin Bieber's song "Baby."

Now is it just me, or do some of the lyrics seem to be a thinly veiled attempt to address viewer criticism? If it is, well let's just say this is definitely not "her moment."

The response to this song, while still negative enough to please those who partake in the current fad, has been surprisingly more positive than the last video. This I do not understand. While the last song wasn't great, at least it had energy; at least it had a melody that didn't make me want to immediately bludgeon my head into a wall. Her last song was good enough to be parodied by Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert and afterwards seem actually enjoyable, but this...

"My Moment" sounds like a song where Rebecca Black has taken every effort to make her song sound beautiful, perhaps as a wonderful sarcastic retort to all those who doubted her. Unfortunately, these efforts fail miserably. The background is ridden with an annoying synth noise that sounds more like something to swat out of the air than to listen to; her singing is very dull and unemotive in a song that clearly calls for more passion and while she tries oh so hard to create something beautiful and soulful, that is best done while your song actually has a discernible melody.

But, like I said, more people have taken a liking to this song. This shouldn't surprise me- I should really be used to people liking mundane crap -but it does. Maybe it's just those who want to see an underdog succeed. That tends to happen, it seems- people taking a liking to music for no reason other than that they feel it needs to be defended. But natural selection happens in the animal world, so why can't it happen here? Why do we have to convince the talentless that they're actually good, when all that does is discourage talent?

In my last review of Rebecca Black, I defended her: I said that people have listened to far worse. Well... This is worse. She's somehow found a way to be more generic. Somehow. For a song that she attempts to use to prove she isn't tone deaf, I offer a very sarcastic "good job," and would give a generous 2 out of 10. I mean, this is so bad that Disney Chanel might pick her up. Look below and stare unto the face of your ears' worst nightmare.
