Infected Mushroom: Pink Nightmares
07-18-2011

Infected Mushroom's new music fails to impress.

The song starts out standard enough for a psytrance band, and at first the sound is promising. Indeed I.M. has had some less than perfect songs over the recent years, and fans have been skeptical as they threw in new sounds such their song "Artillery," which experimented with the sounds of hip hop. They featured Johnathan Davis of Korn to sing in their song "Smashing the Opponent," which, though still being generally well liked, received criticism from fans. Comments sections and message boards alike lit up as fans cried out that they missed the old Infected Mushroom. "It's still good I guess," one comment read, "but this isn't psytrance music anymore."

The new song falls very much along the same lines. As I mentioned, it starts out to be very promising- a rapid fire mix of well put together electronic noise. And this is the part where I, as well as many other fans I'm sure, wondered if this track was going to hold true to what the band great. Was it going to have the same trippy soundscapes? The same psytrance synth-bass that drives the beat of these tracks to other worlds or dimensions? Or, on the other hand, is this simply going to be a paragraph out of the same page from which "Artillery" and "Smashing the Opponent" were written? And, as it turns out, though the song still holds up as decent and not a track bad enough to shun, it still falls among that third option I mentioned. It's decent. Not their best, but decent.

My main complaint would be the vocals. Too many damn vocals. Back in the time of their beginnings, songs would be remarkable without the need of a single lyric. Their music was at its best when it was largely instrumental, and it is worth noticing that even some of their best recent tracks have had an irritating amount of vocals. Maybe they're just trying to keep up with new artists or trying to widen their fan base, but it's been happening far too often lately and it is a deterrent, I'm sure, for most of the older fans. Other than that, I would have to complain at the length and simplicity of the song- where Infected Mushroom songs were once eight to ten minutes of strange, changing, experimental noises that brought the listener to another state of mind, this song seems to be a very straightforward beat and the track is marked with repetition. Where songs such as "Roll us a Giant" or "Heavyweight" would be able to create the deepest soundscapes without sacrificing the beat or melody, their new song opts to play it on the safe side. Yes, is is a good song, but it is missing so much of what the fans love.

But despite my complaints, it is not terrible. While it is definitely not their best, it still utilizes its simplicity well, and could pass for a filler track on a good album. My complaints may or may not prevent me from buying their next album, depending on what else turns up. On a scale of one to ten, I would give this track a rating of 5.5, for being solid but hugely unoriginal and unimaginative.
