Rebecca Black - Friday 03-22-2011 - by Dante Alexander, Staff Mumbler Known for her song "Friday," which quickly went viral on Youtube... but viewers speculate: is it real, or is it satire?
On the surface, the song seems harmless enough; it is a very simple, mostly unremarkable, pop song featuring upbeat lyrics, happy-sounding synths, and very straightforward lyrics that paint a picture of Rebecca Black as an easy-going teenager who is looking forward to the time she gets to spend with her friends on the weekend. But despite the now 35,000,000+ views brought in by the official video, it is quite evident that Black has eclipsed even Bieber as the artist that consumers love to hate.
By the margin of likes to dislikes on the official Youtube video, Rebecca Black has indeed generated a massive amount of negative feedback. The ratio shows such an overly negative opinion that it rivals Kim Kardashian's new single. Comment sections and message boards alike explode wherever her name is mentioned: Is this for real? they often ask. This has to be a joke right?
Yet, there seems to be no reason for it to be satirical; there is nothing so outwardly ridiculous that the content would be funny. Is it bad? Sure. But if someone meant to make a song that simply wasn't any good, they could have done a lot more. If it is a joke, it's not a very good one. It could very well have been just another young artist who made a very unimpressive song, which would demonstrate a point that Youtube should have made obvious by now- people love to have something to hate.
But unlike Justin Bieber, whom I mentioned earlier, Rebecca Black seems to have no fanbase defending her, keeping her in the spotlight. In Bieber's case, his legion of frighteningly dedicated fans try desperately to keep the opinions of the "haters" at bay, which keeps the attention on him for at least a little while more. However, Rebecca Black seems to have little to no following. She seems to be an artist that is in the spotlight only for having such an allegedly terrible song, and this leads me to believe that her fifteen minutes of fame will not last very long at all.
As for the song itself, it is definitely bad, but people seem to forget that they listen to a lot worse on a daily basis. If this song isn't, in fact, a joke, I would give it a 3.5 out of 10
