Lion King Hits Theatres Again, This Time in 3D

There’s that 3D gimmick again. I understand why Disney did this with A Nightmare Before Christmas a few years back, but Lion King?

How To Train Your Dragon works in 3D since it’s 3-dimensional animation. Lion King, although exceptionally animated, it still 2D. It’s just a way for Disney to make some money at the box office, but using a film that was already successful.

I should have issue with this, and in a way I do, I can’t say I mind too much. The only issue I have is that they are marketing a 2D movie with the 3D gimmick. Putting an old movie back in theaters to make money on it again is fine.

Disney is capable of many things, good and bad. Despite them being a monster of a conglomerate, I can respect them. They know how to make money and as a capitalist I like seeing that. At least they make the most money with the things they bother putting effort into. Say what you want about the main animated features, but they’re excellently animated and have very capable writing.

Not everything they produce is good quality though, I understand that. The atrocity they call the Disney Channel is a subject I can go on and on about.

They hit it out of the park with their animated features though. Despite the fact that I’m not nearly as big a fan of the Lion King in particular, I can understand why it’s in theaters again.

Every time a new Disney features animated film comes out, I try and see it in theatres. It’s an experience they’re selling so Lion King is forgiven for this one. A lot of people love that movie and lots of money will be made just to be able to see it in theaters.

Disney is not the first company to do this, nor will they be the last. Sound of Music, Gone With The Wind, and even The Big Lebowski have been shown in theaters again. I wouldn’t see Lion King in theaters, but if it was a film I was a fan of I’d consider it.
